Thoughts from the Headteacher’s office

Are you entitled?

If your child is eligible for free school meals it means they can enjoy delicious healthy meals without the cost and fuss of making packed lunches. Many children at our school are already eating and enjoying our free schools meals, and your child may be able to have them too.

Our nutritious free schools meals are not only healthy and enjoyable; they will give your child a real appetite for learning and help them to achieve their full potential. Professional cooks prepare the meals every day, saving you time and money.

Your child may be eligible to receive free school meals if you are entitled to receive one of the following:

  • Income Support.
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance.
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance.
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.
  • The Guarantee element of State Pension Credit.
  • Child Tax Credit, provided you are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income that does not exceed £16,190.

If you are eligible, accepting the offer of free school meals could save your family around £350 per year, as shown in research conducted by the Children’s Food Trust. In addition, they suggest you could save up to 190 hours a year (almost a week) that would otherwise be spent preparing packed lunches that meet the nutritional standards of our meals.

By accepting, you are also increasing the schools’ funding, allowing more money to be spent on our children’s attainment and extra resources. This funding is known as the Pupil Premium and is worth £935 per pupil in 2014-15.
